What to Do About Sweaty Feet

If you are exercising a lot, or the weather is very hot, your feet may perspire more than normal. But if you find that your feet sweat for no particular reason when you are at rest, you may have a condition known as plantar hyperhidrosis. Although the cause of hyperhidrosis is still unknown, medical experts have determined that the brain signals to the sweat glands that your body is overheating. As a result, the sweat glands in several parts of the body, including the soles of your feet, work overtime to regulate your body temperature. It is not known how to eliminate hyperhidrosis completely, but a number of temporary measures can keep it controlled. Treatment options, which vary with the severity of the condition, include topical gels or lotions, injections, and oral medication. Another treatment option is iontophoresis, which involves sending a mild electrical current through a foot bath to temporarily shut down the sweat glands in the feet. For guidance on which treatment options are best for you, a visit with a podiatrist is suggested.

If you are suffering from hyperhidrosis contact one of our podiatrists of Riznyk Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.

Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.

Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.

In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.

A last resort approach would be surgery, but it is best to speak with your doctor to find out what may be the best treatment for you.

All About Podiatrists

Feet are a critical yet often overlooked component of one’s health. Podiatrists are medical professionals who specialize in maintaining proper foot health. These experts focus solely on the feet, ankles, and other lower limbs. Podiatrists can address a variety of different kinds of afflictions affecting the feet. For example, a podiatrist can help you treat or prevent conditions such as plantar warts, plantar fasciitis, corns, bunions, stress fractures, athlete’s foot, and ingrown toenails. If you are pregnant, elderly, or suffering from diabetes, you might be particularly vulnerable to suffering from foot afflictions, and you could stand to benefit from contacting a podiatrist. Before visiting the podiatrist, you might plan on bringing the pair of shoes with you that you typically wear everyday. This will help a podiatrist get a sense of how the footwear that you usually wear affects the health of your feet. Some podiatrists will also encourage the patient to come to their first visit with specific questions about their feet and anything unusual that they are experiencing. Podiatrists are undoubtedly valuable medical professionals that may be able to help you maintain healthy feet.

If you are experiencing pain in the feet or ankles, don’t join the stubborn majority refusing treatment. Feel free to contact one of our podiatrists from Riznyk Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Drugs
  • Orthotic inserts or soles
  • Surgery on lower extremity fractures

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.

Common Foot Problems as You Age

By the time you reach the age of 50, experts say, you may have put some 75,000 miles on your feet. Like a car with the same mileage, parts may start to break down and need repair. Your feet are no exception. The fatty padding starts to diminish in the heel and ball of the foot. Without an increase of cushioning in the shoes, this can become increasingly painful. A lifetime of wearing high heels, flip flops or other ill-fitting footwear starts to take a toll as you age. The chances of forming calluses, corns, hammertoes, or bunions increase. Ailments, such as gout, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles tendonitis are more likely. The onset of diabetes or blood circulation issues are common, causing sores and blisters on the feet to take longer to heal. Foot ulcers can develop, which may lead to further and more serious problems. Your tendons may tighten, causing a decrease in flexibility. At the same time, the ligaments begin to stretch, which can lead to flat feet and an increased risk of ankle sprains. After 50, taking your feet for granted is no longer an option. It is a good idea to make regular appointments with a podiatrist to monitor your feet as you move into your senior years.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Riznyk Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

The location of the cuboid bone is on the outside of the foot. When this bone becomes fractured or injured it is referred to as cuboid syndrome. The cuboid bone is the only part of the foot that supports the fourth and fifth toes which significantly contribute to foot movements. Many people who suffer from a cuboid fracture may experience mobility problems and they may have a limited range of motion. This can make it difficult to complete everyday activities and the fracture site may become bruised or appear swollen. Balance may be affected and specific stretches and exercises may need to be performed to improve flexibility and strength of the overall foot. Cuboid syndrome or a fracture may lead to the development of degenerative arthritis. This may be a result of a loss or damage that has been done to the cartilage and the bones may rub together. This can be a serious foot condition. If you are afflicted with foot pain and think it may be cuboid syndrome, please consult with a podiatrist who can offer you the best treatment methods.

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. If you have cuboid syndrome, consult with one of our podiatrists from Riznyk Podiatry. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.
