Gout is a condition that generally affects the joints in the big toe. It is a form of arthritis, and can cause severe pain and discomfort. It occurs as a result of excess uric acid in the blood which forms crystals that lodge in the joints. An abundance of uric acid can come from genetic factors, or from eating foods that have elevated purine levels. These foods can include shellfish, red meat, and drinks that are made with large amounts of sugar. Additionally, gout can form due to obesity, kidney disease, or from taking specific types of medications. It is beneficial to incorporate healthy foods into your diet, and it is helpful to drink plenty of fresh water daily. If you are afflicted with gout, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can effectively diagnose and treat this condition.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Riznyk Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Stretches Before and After Running

Many people who enjoy the sport of running will gradually understand the importance of properly warming up and cooling down before and after a run, in addition to eating healthy foods. Research has shown that a strong body will endure less injuries, and this is achieved by performing simple stretches and exercises. These can include lunges, hip flexor stretches, and shin splints can possibly be avoided by practicing heel and toe walks. If you would like additional information about how running injuries can affect the feet, and how to prevent them, it is suggested that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist.

All runners should take extra precaution when trying to avoid injury. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists of Riznyk Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

There are a lot of mistakes a runner can make prior to a workout that can induce injury. A lot of athletes tend to overstretch before running, instead of saving those workouts for a post-run routine. Deep lunges and hand-to-toe hamstring pulls should be performed after a workout instead of during a warmup. Another common mistake is jumping into an intense routine before your body is physically prepared for it. You should try to ease your way into long-distance running instead of forcing yourself to rush into it.

More Tips for Preventing Injury

  • Incorporate Strength Training into Workouts - This will help improve the body’s overall athleticism
  • Improve and Maintain Your Flexibility – Stretching everyday will help improve overall performance
  • “Warm Up” Before Running and “Cool Down” Afterward – A warm up of 5-10 minutes helps get rid of lactic acid in the muscles and prevents delayed muscle soreness
  • Cross-Training is Crucial
  • Wear Proper Running Shoes
  • Have a Formal Gait Analysis – Poor biomechanics can easily cause injury

Children and young teenagers who have heel pain may be experiencing a foot condition that is known as Sever's disease. This is an ailment that can affect the growth plate in the heel of children who frequently participate in running and jumping activities. Another term for this condition is calcaneal apophysitis. Sever’s disease can cause ankle pain and difficulty walking, which may lead to limping. Many patients find relief when the activity that caused the pain is temporarily stopped. Upon returning to physical activities, wearing supportive shoes may help to prevent this condition from recurring. Some patients find it beneficial to perform stretching exercises, as this can help to strengthen the Achilles tendon and lower the risk of future injuries. If your child is complaining of heel pain, it is strongly recommended that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can effectively treat this condition.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see one of our podiatrists from Riznyk Podiatry. Our doctors can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Is Cuboid Syndrome Common?

The cuboid is a cube-shaped bone located in the middle of the foot. Since this bone is in an area that is not directly involved in bearing weight, an injury to the cuboid bone is not common. Nevertheless, it is still wise to be on the lookout for any signs of injury to the cuboid bone. Cuboid syndrome occurs when the cuboid bone is knocked out of its proper alignment, typically due to another injury, such as an ankle sprain, or from repetitive stress being placed on the bone. Symptoms of this condition include foot pain, bruising, swelling, and a reduced range of motion in the foot. Cuboid syndrome can be diagnosed through physical examination and treatments are typically conservative. If you are experiencing the symptoms of cuboid syndrome, it is recommended that you seek the care of a podiatrist.

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. If you have cuboid syndrome, consult with one of our podiatrists from Riznyk Podiatry. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.
