Lack of Flexibility in the Big Toe

If it becomes more and more difficult to flex your big toe, you may have a condition known as hallux limitus. This condition affects the joint between the big toe and the foot, making the area inflexible and causing pain when you walk. As the condition progresses, it can lead to arthritis and bone spurs. Symptoms include a bony lump on the top of the big toe, numbness or tingling if the bone spurs press on a nerve, and a callus building up under the joint. These conditions may also affect your gait, as you try to compensate for the pain, and further affect the knee, hip or low back. Hallux limitus can be caused by injury, arthritis, overuse and genetics. Home treatment options include wearing low-heeled shoes that fit properly and have a thick or rigid sole; wearing gel pads or other orthotics in your shoes; and taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatories. But if your big toe pain continues, or worsens, it is a good idea to seek the professional opinion and diagnosis of a podiatrist as soon as possible.

Do You Have Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a band of fibrous tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toes. When the plantar fascia becomes inflamed or partially torn, the injury is known as plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis, which is often a result of overuse, results in heel pain, heel spurs, and pain in the arch of the foot. Pain from plantar fasciitis gradually worsens over time and is usually the worst after resting, especially after waking up in the morning, or sitting for a long period of time. Other times that pain from plantar fasciitis can persist include after exercise, when stretching the foot, or while pressing the sides of the foot. If you believe that you may have plantar fasciitis, it would be wise to consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists  from Riznyk Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

Stress Fractures Occur in the Feet or Ankles

Stress fractures in bones are tiny cracks which occur over time. They are caused by frequent, repetitive force being applied to the bone. Athletes that participate in high impact sports – such as track and field, soccer, tennis, basketball, gymnastics, and cheerleading – can be at greater risk of developing a stress fracture in their feet and ankles. This is especially true if the intensity of the activity increases suddenly. Stress fractures can cause dull pain in a specific area that worsens with activity and gets better with rest. If you believe you may have a stress fracture in your feet or ankles, it is suggested that you stop the activity and make an appointment with a podiatrist. Along with a physical examination, the podiatrist may need to look at various imaging tests, including X-ray, ultrasound, bone scan, CT scan, or MRI, which is highly effective in detecting fracture lines. These will help in making a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Activities where too much pressure is put on the feet can cause stress fractures. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists from Riznyk Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep your pain free and on your feet.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

  • Runners
  • People affected with Osteoporosis
  • Tennis or basketball players
  • Gymnasts
  • High impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.
